Skull tattoos are a staple design in tattoo culture, they have historic ties to Mexican culture where the sugar skull design originated from. Skull tattoos are also one of the more recognisable designs seen frequently in traditional style tattoo art, going back to the times before tattoos became commonplace. Skull tattoos can be done in a life-like style, utilising black and grey ink to create dimension and movement. Colored skull tattoos can look equally striking, especially when paired with gothic-style roses and other traditional style tattoo designs.

Skull tattoos have a clear meaning that originated back in the era of traditional tattoos. They symbolise morality, and can refer to the morality of the wearer or of human-kind in general. Skull tattoos also symbolise death and the journey into the afterlife. It is worth noting that sugar skull tattoos also symbolise death, although their symbolism is more closely linked with honouring the departed and guiding their spirits back in to the lives of those they have left behind. Morbid though it may seem, skull tattoos are a great addition to anyone’s tattoo collection where they will undoubtably take on personal meanings which may or may not reflect the historic symbolism of the skull tattoo.
